Does ChatGPT save your data?

Yes. When you type something into ChatGPT, it saves it. Your questions, your uploads, the files you share, the conversations you thought you deleted: by default, OpenAI keeps all of it. That is the short answer, but the full picture is more complicated, and some of it happened while most users were looking the other way.

This article explains what ChatGPT actually stores, why it stores it, what happened in 2025 that changed the privacy situation for millions of ordinary users, and what you can realistically do if you want more control over your data.

What exactly does ChatGPT store?

ChatGPT saves both the personal information you provide and technical data it collects automatically. That includes your account details (name, email address, contact information) and your user content: everything you type into the chat and any files you upload.

On top of that, it logs system-generated data: timestamps, usage statistics, device type, operating system, browser, IP address, approximate location, and payment details if you have a paid plan.

So when you ask ChatGPT to help you draft a difficult email to your boss, or you paste in some medical information to get a plain-English explanation, or you share a spreadsheet from work: that content is being stored on OpenAI's servers. OpenAI themselves confirm that all conversations are stored on their servers. Unless you take specific steps to change this, you should assume nothing you type into ChatGPT is private by default.

Why does OpenAI keep it?

There are a few reasons. The data you provide is used to help OpenAI train the ChatGPT model to become better at answering questions and helping users. If ChatGPT crashes or starts producing harmful content, engineers may also study stored logs to diagnose the problem.

OpenAI may use your conversations to help train future AI models unless you opt out through their privacy portal, which also lets you delete your data or account. The opt-out option exists, but it is not the default, so most users are contributing to training without realising it.

One thing that sometimes confuses people: OpenAI does not sell user data. The company has explicitly stated in its privacy policy that it does not sell user data or share content with third parties for marketing purposes. That does not mean your data is simply locked away and untouched, though. It means they keep it for their own purposes rather than selling it on.

What happened in 2025 that most users missed

In May 2025, something significant happened that most news coverage buried. A federal judge issued a preservation order requiring OpenAI to retain all ChatGPT user logs as part of the New York Times copyright lawsuit. The ruling was explicit: preserve and segregate all output log data that would otherwise be deleted, including conversations users had already removed.

To be clear about who this affected: the original order applied to users of ChatGPT's free, Plus, Pro, and Team tiers, but explicitly excluded Enterprise, Education, and API customers under zero data retention agreements. If you were a regular paying subscriber or free user between April and September 2025, conversations you believed were permanently deleted were, in fact, being kept.

After months of litigation, OpenAI is no longer under a legal order to retain consumer ChatGPT and API content indefinitely. The obligations under the earlier order ended on 26 September 2025, and OpenAI returned to its standard data retention practices: deleted ChatGPT conversations and Temporary Chats are automatically deleted from their systems within 30 days.

But there is a catch. While OpenAI is no longer required to indefinitely retain new user data going forward, it will securely store limited historical April to September 2025 user data. Bloomberg Law reported that by November 2025, the judge further ordered OpenAI to hand over 20 million de-identified ChatGPT logs to the Times and other news plaintiffs.

The broader lesson here is a simple one: when you use a service that stores your data, legal disputes and court orders can change what happens to that data without any notification to you.

Deleting your chats: what actually happens

When you delete a conversation in ChatGPT, it disappears from your sidebar immediately. But that is not the same as it disappearing from OpenAI's systems. According to OpenAI's own help documentation, the data is not actually removed from their servers for another 30 days, and that is under normal circumstances.

There is also a subtler issue that many users overlook. If you have enabled ChatGPT's Memory feature, stored memories are retained separately from your chat history. Deleting a conversation does not wipe the memories extracted from it. You have to clear those manually through Settings.

Does the plan you're on make a difference?

Yes, significantly. Different versions of ChatGPT operate under different privacy and retention rules.

Free and Plus users have conversations saved by default, can opt out of training, and have 30-day deletion after removing chats. Since 2024 it is no longer possible to disable chat history completely. Instead, Temporary Chat mode was introduced as the main way to keep conversations from being saved for training.
Team users are covered by a data processing agreement. Conversations are not used for training by default, though they are still stored.
Enterprise and Education users get stronger protections. If you have an Enterprise ChatGPT account, the default is that your input will not be used for training purposes. These accounts were also excluded from the 2025 court preservation order.
Temporary Chat mode (available on all plans) keeps conversations out of your history and out of training data. Messages are automatically deleted after 30 days, and temporary sessions are never used for model training or fine-tuning. Note that "deleted after 30 days" still means they exist on OpenAI's servers for up to a month.

Can OpenAI employees see your conversations?

For maximum privacy, you should avoid sharing sensitive or confidential details with ChatGPT, since employees may review conversations to improve the system. OpenAI's privacy documentation confirms that human reviewers can access chat content for safety and quality purposes. This is fairly standard practice across AI companies, but it surprises many users who assume their chats are only ever read by a machine.

What about data breaches?

ChatGPT has not suffered any major security breaches, but it did experience a couple of minor data leaks. In one instance, a software bug resulted in some users seeing others' chat titles when logged in. The bug did not expose full chat histories or other sensitive data. Another leak revealed the last four digits of some users' saved credit cards.

Sensitive personal or business information stored by ChatGPT can become a target for cybercriminals, leading to potential privacy violations and financial losses. No large company storing hundreds of millions of conversations can guarantee this will never happen.

What can you actually do?

You have more options than you might think, and they are worth using.

Opt out of training. Navigate to OpenAI's privacy portal and submit a request to opt out of training. This stops your conversations being used to improve the model.
Use Temporary Chat for sensitive topics. If you are discussing something personal, medical, or work-related, switch to Temporary Chat first. It will not appear in your history and will not be used for training.
Delete conversations regularly, bearing in mind the 30-day server-side delay. This limits how much historical data is sitting on OpenAI's systems in the event of a breach or a future court order.
Clear your Memory separately. Deleting chats is not enough if you have Memory enabled. Go into Settings and clear stored memories manually.
Be careful at work. With OpenAI collecting and storing identifying information about users and the user content they submit, countless companies worldwide have moved to ban employees from using it. If your employer has not addressed this, treat ChatGPT as a consumer product, not a confidential tool. Do not paste in client data, proprietary code, or anything your company would not want stored on a third-party server.
If privacy is non-negotiable, use the right product. If you have a specific compliance reason to require provable deletion, the right product is the API with Zero Data Retention or a ChatGPT Enterprise tenancy with ZDR enabled, not a consumer plan.

The honest summary

ChatGPT is not secretly mining your data and selling it to advertisers. But it is storing a great deal of what you share, using much of it to improve its models, and subject to legal and regulatory forces that can change data retention rules without warning. The 2025 court order was a useful reminder that when a service stores your data, you are not fully in control of what happens to it.

The practical takeaway is not to stop using ChatGPT, but to treat it the way you would any cloud service: do not share anything you would not be comfortable with a third party seeing, use the privacy controls that are available, and pay attention when the rules change.
